While many expected Matildas goalkeeper Brianna Davey to be preparing for a World Cup, she instead pulled on the boots on Sunday for the St Kilda Sharks in the VWFL. From the outset, she looked right at home, prowling the back line on Darebin’s dangerous forward, Katie Brennan.
After quarter time, she was moved onto the ball where she looked equally comfortable, even pinch-hitting in the ruck. Davey also demonstrated an innate ability to read the game; creating contests, splitting packs and even sneaking forward to kick a goal. Her presence and physicality around the ground are what no doubt makes her an intimidating shot-stopper on the soccer pitch.
With Melbourne Victory’s W-League season not due to get underway until September, let’s hope we can see Brianna Davey competing in the VWFL for several weeks yet.
