In torrential conditions at Casey Fields on Sunday the Brisbane Lions secured a first-up 15 point win over Melbourne in their round one encounter of the inaugural AFL Women’s season.
For experienced Brisbane defender Leah Kaslar, the win was a special moment. “Beating Melbourne for us is a huge thing, so we’re really proud. It was an effort by all of our players and everyone stood up when we needed them. Yeah, it’s just unbelievable” Kaslar said.

After Melbourne failed to capitalise on a distinct wind advantage in the opening quarter the contest evened up in the second term. However, the weather rolled in late in the second quarter and just before half-time the match was halted and the players were sent from the field due to lightning.
In the relentless rain that followed the lightning storm, the Brisbane players were the first to adapt to the conditions.
“We played a practice match a couple of weeks ago against GWS and we played wet weather footy. We learnt a bit of a lesson during that game and that really helped with today’s efforts.” Kaslar added.
Coming off a pre-season where composure under pressure and ball movement were the key areas of focus, Brisbane looked the more assured side going forward despite having less inside-50 entries.
“I guess Queensland has been a really hard-hitting state and we’re not really known for our skills and our ball movement so that’s definitely an area we’ve been working on.” Kaslar explained.
Brisbane are on the road again in round two, taking on the Fremantle Dockers in Perth. While back-to-back road trips seems like a daunting task, Kaslar says the Lions are taking it in their stride. “It’s another new challenge, we’re looking forward to it.”
