Dal Pos relishing coaching opportunity

July 10, 2017

After a breakout AFLW season in 2017, GWS Giants’ midfielder Jess Dal Pos is stepping back into coaching for round two of the NAB AFL Women’s Under 18 Championships. Under the expert eye of Adelaide premiership coach Bec Goddard, Dal Pos is taking on assistant coaching duties with the newly formed ‘Allies’ team.

While Dal Pos’s playing credentials speak for themselves, it might be news to the wider football public that she is also a successful coach. While making the step-up from youth girls to senior level at the Darebin Falcons four years ago, Dal Pos also took on the head coach role of the Falcons’ youth girls team. Throughout 2013 and 2014 while plying her trade in the Darebin midfield with the likes of Daisy Pearce, Aasta O’Connor and Lauren Arnell, Dal Pos also successfully coached the Darebin youth girls to back-to-back premierships.

Fast-forward to 2017 and an approach from O’Connor (AFL Female Talent Operations Manager) to join the Allies’ coaching panel - Dal Pos jumped at the opportunity.

“Running some school clinics with GWS and AFL Victoria really sparked my interest in coaching again after a few years away from coaching youth girls. So, when the offer (to coach) came up, I said ‘yes’ immediately.” Dal Pos said.

Dal Pos will be joined on the Allies’ coaching panel by fellow AFLW stars, Renee Forth (GWS), Chelsea Randall (Adelaide) and Katherine Smith (Melbourne). Together they will hopefully guide a number of the top-age under 18 players onto AFLW lists for 2018.

“I’m mostly looking forward to forming relationships with coaches and players in female footy outside of Victoria and New South Wales and share ideas and experiences.

I’m also super-excited about watching these girls that have come from non-footballing states grow and develop in the environment they deserve but don’t necessarily have access to all year round. I think we’ll see a few girls really stamp themselves on the female footy scene.” Dal Pos added.
